Who is Jeremy Hara?

Jeremy Hara is a multi-talented artist. His work has been described as witty, ironic and refreshingly different. Jeremy Hara is a founding and active member of the renegade art collective Empire Squared. When asked to write an artist statement he remarked, "Artist statement?!? No one reads artist statements!!" Jeremy Hara has regularly engaged in the practice of writing about himself in the third person and evidently he plans on continuing this practice.

Sometimes Jeremy Hara writes about himself in a smaller text so that people don’t read it. Jeremy Hara appreciates you. Thank you.

The dreaded biography.

Jeremy Hara was born in Santa Monica, California. He now lives in Eureka, California. In the time in between he did things, most notably art. His art is far more interesting than his biography so go look at his artwork.

Jeremy Hara’s Art

Thank you for continuing to read. I guess you want to know more. Here is the whole abbreviated story. Jeremy Hara is the eldest son of Jimmy Hara and Diane Harris Hara. Jimmy, Jeremy’s father, was born in the internment camp in Gila River, Arizona. Jimmy grew up in Watts, South Central, Compton, and the Crenshaw areas of LA. Jimmy later became a doctor and married a nurse named Diane Harris. Diane was born in Pasadena and grew up in Santa Monica and had a very different experience growing up than Jimmy. Being half “white” and half Japanese American has shaped Jeremy into the fine Hapa Haole he is today.

Jeremy Hara was born and raised in Santa Monica. Technically born in West LA but only people from LA would squabble. In 1986 at the age of 7 Jeremy went on The Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament with his mother and younger brother. He marched from LA to NY and then to DC over the coarse of 9 months. He graduated from Santa Monica High School (Samohi) in 1996. He then began a long tenure of “majoring in community college”. He attended Santa Monica College (Pico Tech) until 1998 when he moved to Humboldt county. He then attended College of the Redwoods (CR) until transferring into Humboldt State University (HSU) in 2003.

Jeremy Hara cofounded the art collective Empire Squared with fellow student artists Rachel Grusin, Donovan Clark and Forest Stearns. Over the next few years Empire Squared had hundreds of art shows. The group grew quickly and in 2004 they opened the Empire Squared Gallery of Contemporary Arts which was a gallery and group artist studio. The space operated for over eight years and was one of the few galleries displaying cutting edge contemporary artwork in the area. Jeremy Hara has shown his work across the North Coast and in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Jeremy has much more to say but he is saving that for his autobiography.
